Nothing at all sexual or creepy, just a strong intimate attachment, a way for him to have the intimate male relationship he subconsciously craves without having to acknowledge that what he wants is a homosexual relationship. Sully's back story (that we know of) lends itself to him actually being a repressed homosexual, much more so than any contrivance of Nate being gay.
