Yeah. It happened twice on me. The original GBA. Like 4 months later, the SP came out. I bought it that late in. I got so mad. I made sure to wait for at least the second release of a Nintendo handheld from that point on. I never used the damn thing. Except to trade Pokemon. Next, the Gamecube. I didn't hate it. But I picked it over the PS2. I could only have one or the other. By choosing the GC, I didn't own a PS2, the entire time it was the current console. And you know how many game series I couldn't play.
