It just occurred to me how ironic this problem is:

To my knowledge, Nintendo is the only of the big three with a first party open world RPG franchise (Xenoblade Chronicles), much less multiple RPG franchises. Unless I missed something with Sony and MS?

I...think you're right? I mean, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, Golden Sun, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Mario & Luigi, Mother and Pokemon. I don't think either of the others have 1st party RPG franchises.

I really wish we'd see all of these appear on the Wii U (well, except Mario & Luigi, that's always been a handheld series). Nintendo have the IPs necessary to build a solid RPG library for the console, they just need to take the time to develop them.

Yeah, the open world RPG is the real shocker though since, after Oblivion and especially Skyrim's success you would think Sony and MS would have jumped all over that.  Maybe they will, I don't know, but it's funny that Nintendo of all of them is the first to have a game in a similar vein (minus, obviously, the battle system which is entirely different).

And yeah, Nintendo seems to have had to take a beating the past couple years to learn they need to push more of their IP together and have a diverse library earlier on.  The Wii U will probably have a competent showing from several of those IP in the long run, but they need to try and have them come out throughout their console life cycles rather than a ways in.
