I don't have any set criteria, but usually I need to have about 8-10 games that I want to play before I'll consider getting something. The Wii U is the only system I've bought that had fewer than that available at the time that I bought it. When I bought it, I really wanted Nintendo Land, LEGO City Undercover, Rayman Legends (not out yet), and W101 (also not out yet). I was also really interested in ZombiU, Trine 2, Nano Assault Neo, Darksiders 2, Sonic Racing Transformed, and a handfull of other titles that wouldn't have been enough to get me to buy the system on their own, but cumulatively made it feel worth it. Also, while there weren't necessarily any particular games I was interested in, there was a noticeable uptick in indie support, so I felt pretty confident that I'd be able to find stuff I liked pretty soon (which I have). And I knew MK, Smash, 3D Mario, and Zelda would come eventually, and Nintendo has built up enough good will with me that I'm confident they'll deliver the type of games I want (and they have).
