1. Buttons would still be missing.

That's the biggest issue for me by far. Obviously touch-based joysticks are a bigger issue, but that doesn't make touchscreen buttons likeable.

2. Sony has created a better gaming device than Apple ever will, but Nintendo is still around.

A better gaming device that's still a shit value outside of the niche of Vita acolytes still devoted to it, due to piss poor software support and those criminal memory prices.

3. There aren't all that many third party developers left on the 3DS, so a mass exodus cannot happen.

Also true.

4. Even in a theoretical scenario where smartphones can match a dedicated handheld, not all third parties would ignore Nintendo's market. Aside from a lower amount of games to compete with, there would also be a customer base that is much more willing to pay premium prices.

Agreed. People being conditioned for cheap and free games in the mobile space is a FAR bigger issue than the controls.

On top of all that, I think the biggest issue is that...people who play games on Apple devices have gone several years without built-in controls, and the space has still been rolling in cash. It's never been mandatory for people to buy in. Thus smartphones have been able to whittle down the market for dedicated handhelds plenty without one. I don't expect it's inclusion to change much when it's already having an impact anyway.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21
