Yeah, what you just said is lore.  The actual story in full is "Lit the fire" or "Didn't light it".  It is absolute crap.

If you like lore good for you, but don't pretend a piss poor non existent story is a good one, let alone the best.

I said it was the best telling, not the best story.

And that's not the full story. Don't blame the game because your interactions with characters was stunted by your inability to find them or understand their motivations. Also, seperating lore and story is pretty stupid in general but its especially so since they're so entwined. You literally interact with legends from bygone ages in your own story. Artorias, Havel, Gwynn, Nito, Gwyndolin, Big Hat Logan, Quelanna and the rest of the chaos children, Keiran, Gough, Dusk, Elizabeth, Sif, etc are all historical lore figures that you can encounter and shape your entire story.

The story at its core is about your decision and you're supposed to try and determine what's the best path. Do you restore the status quo and aloow people to live in a comfortable age for a few more generations, or do you snuff out the morally ambiguous current system and send civilization back to the dark ages to start over? Are you being used by Frampt or Kaathe no matter what choice you make? The natural state of being for all living humanoids looks horrendous, but is it actually? Who do you kill, and are you right for killing them?

While not the best, saying it's just light the fire or don't is like summing up the Godfather as a movie about violent Italians.
