Knowing Canadas racist past (slavery, native americans) can I say I am proud to be Canadian? Same goes for an Aboriginal. After all the shit they have been through, you know small things like getting their land stolen, being sent to residential schools, can they say they are proud to be Canadian? What about an African American. Segregation, Slavery, etc etc, can they say they are proud to be American? Oriental-Canadians have been discriminate (Canadian Railway) in Canada, can they say they are porud to be Canadian? Mexicans are called illegal all the time lol, can they say they are proud Americans? Ok you get the point I can say Im proud to be Canadian, but I will also say im ashamed, because of Canadas pas.
What do you think? |
If you really think Canada had much of a history involving slavery you really need to go back to school ... Slavery was used heavily in labour intensive, low skill, "High Margin" industries like the Cotton industry; this was never particularly widespread in Canada.
On top of this I think it is the wrong approach to look at your country in a negative light because of what happened in your Great Great Grandparents generation when (for the most part) you live in one of the few countries in the world which has eliminated most similar problems.
