The Xbox was selling better at $500 then it was when its price dropped to $400, the PS3 at $600 was outselling the 360 $399. Theres obviously more to those numbers then I'm letting on but the point is systems can sell at prices above $399, pressure to be below that pricetag comes from competiton of which Nintendo will have none. You're right realistically Nintendo will not sell there system for that much, but I think they could get away with it and it would be more profitable for them then $399 and benefit them in the longrun if they used that pricetag to beef up specs. Just my feelings on it but I don't think sonys next console will be less then $499.

Lmao, where did you get any of those stats? A $450 Nintendo console would be a tombstone for them. $400 is the sweet spot, and I struggle to believe that they would make it more than $300.

Vg charts (PS3 was outselling 360 WW, and X1 price drop didn't stop sales from plumeting in the summer). $399 would be the safest option, but I reckon it would have to be more then $299 in order to pack the specs necessary to appeal to the core. If they had 3D Mario, Smash Bros, Fzero and superior quality 3rd party titles (compared to PS4/X1) within the launch window I'd bet you a cutting edge $449 Nintendo system will open with higher numbers then the Wii U but of course we'll never know :p
Seriously though console prices have been increasing, neither the 360 or PS3 have reached that magical $99 pricepoint 7-8years later. In 2013 $399 is the new 299 and by that logic $449 in 2017 is not that crazy at launch if you have the specs/features and software to back it up. But I'll agree Nintendo wouldn't do it.

Its also about brand power. PlayStation is a very strong brand in Europe and Asia and sells well even at very high prices. PS4 costs $670 in India and yet its selling at a very high rate because people know that they will be able to play the multiplats and exclusives they want on a PlayStation device. Nintendo cannot say the same, there platforms don't sell well at even moderate prices.

Yeah, I definitely agree. My thing is Nintendo has that power where their core audience is concerned, if they launch strong with software there core fans will pay any reasonable price and IMO 449 for cutting edge tech in 2017 would be reasonable- remember that the gamecube launched at $199 and the wii at $250. Xbox at 299, Xbox 360 at 399. Beyond that it would play into repositioning Nintendo's brand, they're not going for cheap gimmicks any more or fads, they're selling a premium product which will have Nintendo best IPs out of the gate and superior 3rd party titles to sony and microsoft. This would be the pitch anyway ;)
