As you can see in this thread there are a lot of people who spend a good amount more on their PC than "necessary". Everyone who bought an expensive PC acknowledged that you can get a decent PC for a lot less so I don't know where you're trying to go with this.
For your information, I and many other people do buy for performance and not for price/performance ratios. It doesn't matter how much more 5% more performance costs since it's the performance that counts and not the money.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
