This isn't my first time going, but i get what you are saying and i agree. The problem is there are long stretches of time when i will be alone and there will be nothing to see, 9 hour flight to rome, train rides between major cities often go through farmland that just is not interesting. Last time i was in Rome i did not sleep foir 3 days hehe. For example the Coliseum looks awesome at night.
