I'm guessing you probably started playing games either in the 8-bit or 16-bit era. Which would mean that your transition from mainstream to core player happened around the 16-bit era. In that case, it would be no surprise at all that you favor the 16-bit era games; nostalgia for your first experiences in a particular market of gaming are quite common. I certainly remember Final Fantasy VI quite fondly (and still enjoy it a lot), as it was the first console RPG that really drew me in.
