Apparently he went to an Private American school in Japan. He also visited California, and New York growing up. Probably the biggest reason he does not speak "engrish".
When I lived in Korea, alot of Koreans I knew actually spoke english very well. I found out later that majority don't attempt it in front of foreigners because they are afraid of being laughed at by native speakers. This always pissed me off. I usually notice that young americans want to make fun of foreigners speaking english, but never even try to learn a host countries language, like it was beneth them.
When I tried speaking korean, I was always treated with kindness, and encouragement. At most stores I was usually given a better deal on things.
