I have all night for you to explain how "the praise they get is entirely unwarranted." Of course, it's your opinion, but I'm expecting good stuff, so apply the effort. 

Bad writing, terrible story, cliche characters, zero level design, waist high cover, has no feeling of actually being an adventure, oh look another collapsing bridge or something, etc. etc.
