A small loss is nothing for them to worry about, providing they're confident they can make in a reasonable mount of time. They were taking a moderate one at launch ($60~ per unit, if i remember correctly), but 1 game sale and a year subscription to PS+ put it in the black. So a short term loss for a long term gain.
Really though, by this time next year the PS4's profit margin should be pretty large. They'd be able to cut the price even if they were worried about short term losses.
