mine said: Xbox is a business, it needs to make Microsoft money, they won't keep reducing their profits to keep market share, they'll probably keep the price as it is, but take out the free games, maybe another price drop in late 2015 when Sony has finally made their price drops official, but they won't be able to compete because of all of the exclusives Sony has and the far superior 3rd party software presence. Consoles are very much here to stay, physical hardware will always be more reliable than cloud processing and people will always prefer game ownership over some kind of subscription based model.
Exclusives are the differenciating factor here, consoles still have custom hardware that you can't buy for a PC, hell you can't buy an MCM like Wii U has, you can't buy APUs like in PS4 and Xbox One and you can't buy GDDR5 sticks. ... but with TRUE NEXT-GEN hardware. Based on GPUs with on-chip GDDR those "consoles" will run circles even around the PS4. True current gen is already here, Next-Gen is years away, like 2018 at the earliest, because it's going to take that long for the Next-Gen tech to become cost effective. Microsoft is preparing to move to a (free !!) Windows "XBox-Edition" were they will make money from the build in Game-Store. Microsoft will charge for windows as long as they can, if there's a console market they'll try to keep their place in it, they just need to actually make exclusives and not try to come up with stupid policies surrounding their products.
Steam will own the steambox market, because it's their OS that is the basis for it, what happens with the PC gaming market depends on the developers adopting Steam OS, if that happens then Microsoft OS days are toast, unless they actually start to develop their software so it works on it's own merits. They need to make their exclusives worthwhile for people to buy Xbox. |
