   Mario Kart 64

   System: Nintendo 64
   Genre: Racing
   Year: 1997
   Rank last year: 8 (^ 1)

The best racing game on the list is Mario Kart 64. It is the second game in the series and the first that was in 3D. The characters themselves though are pre-rendered sprites that are done so well that it almost never shows. The concept of Mario Kart should be simple to understand. As a racing game, the player must take first place, but in this series you can help yourself with items.

Of course, newer games in the series are technically better and one could substitute this game in the list with most newer ones. Mario Kart 64 however, is still the best game in terms of balance and how it doesn't need tricks and flashy features to bring excellent track design. The game is better in rewarding players for skill and is less 'luck based' than newer games in the series. Most tracks contain short-cuts that require true skill to pull off successfully. No less, I find myself usually finding the remakes of this game's tracks among the best tracks in newer games and pick them when I get the chance. Surely, in a game like this, the tracks are the most important.
