Financially it was a good thing to do and that is what matters.
A limited release across US is nothing against a later release WW as "The Movie that the North Koreans hate!". This could make Sony not only more money with the movie than they had hoped but could also generate a positive buzz when they finally release it to spite a bad regime.
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
