Every generation people hold expectations of significant new gameplay experiences. Though as you point out, they are repeatedly disappointed as developers are focused on just managing the financial and technical cost of moving to new platforms.

Last generation was the same...although to be fair I guess by this stage we did have Gears of War and Uncharted.

Really its only the WiiU thats pushing boundaries, but its had an extra year.

Which is no different than last gen, when the 360 had that extra year.
