That seems to be the reason people don't like it is because it plays it safe and it's linear, which aren't exactly things that inherently bother me. I mean, a game that takes more risks can be more attractive and fun, but I wouldn't write SS off just for that. I think you're right about Nintendo realizing they need to distance themselves from that though. Zelda U seems to be a complete antithesis of what Skyward Sword was, except maybe in the story department (too early to tell in regards to that).

The biggest complaints about Skyward Sword were the motion controls, the linear gameplay and lack of a good exploration-based overworld. I think. If you don't care that much about these (I assure you the controls work just fine and are super immersive), you're in for an awesome ride. The story is awesome, the puzzle-based overworld exploration is really nice, the dungeons are by far the best I've played in any Zelda game, the soundtrack takes some getting used to but is still fantastic in its own right, the items you get are really useful and fun to use when compared to previous 3D Zeldas (particularly TP and to a lesser extent WW), the combat is amazing and the boss fights (though there are a couple of very weak ones) are mostly good.

And that was... very superficial, actually. Seriously, this game is awesome, and even though I can see why some people would dislike it, it's unbelievable that they can consider it as bad as they do - probably just goes to show how spoiled Zelda fans are.

Sounds fantastic to me! I'm not someone who demands heavy exploration in Zelda games. I think a wide variety in the series is necessary. Some games can be more linear, while others can be more open-ended, imo. I've heard great things about the story, I love the art style and I don't think I'll have an issue with the controls (I did get through TP Wii, so this shouldn't be an issue).

I really don't see how people can consider it one of the worst in the series. But hey, I guess that tells you how high the quality of the games always are (CDi not included), and what you said about the fans being spoiled. If they want to complain about a game being shit, they should look at Ubisoft's recent catalogue (Far Cry 4 not included).
