As for why the UK doesn't have a break.... it's because of money. The month of December is one of, if not the, busiest periods in British football. There is plenty of money to be made, lots of TV revenue and the boxing day (day after xmas) attendances for games is usually higher than average as well. It's just a good time to make money.

True, I just meant if England/Wales had harsh winters then even the monetary payoff would have to be weighed against costs of the weather.  Can blame me a bit, I always look forward to Boxing Day fixtures as well.
