Well, you're correct. :)
After the first boss, you'll have a long cutscene on which you ask for a codec password. However, your source doesn't remember it, but he eagerly says that you should check the back of the game box and the codec can be found written there. Indeed, there's a codec number there:
That's the only real way of getting the codec number. There's just no other way around; you either have the box or you won't progress.
Which actually screwed a lot of PSN players who downloaded the game but Konami forgot to give them the codec number (which was later added on a free digital manual), but fortunately they were on the age of Internet. You can't say the same back when this game released :P
