PlayStation game... Think outside the box... With 'outside' and 'box' in italics... You mean like, 'outside' the game?  Transending the 4th barrier so to speak? The only series I can think of from what I heard of that does these sort of things like having to reset the console, knowing what's on your memory card and whatever, is; Metal Gear Solid.

Though I never played it so again I'm not sure. Even though my PS1 collection is my third biggest it's still grossly incomplete .
