Well I'm not sure, but it seems that when the first Grand Turismo came out the market was dominated by arcade racers from Sega (Daytona, Sega Rally) and Namco (WipeOut, Wave Racer). Grand Turismo was a whole new breed of racer. Then of course the competition tried to emulate GT's success (Sega GT, Ferrari F355 Challenge, Forza) which all hyped up Grand Turismo.
