I think the racing genre has so many unrealistic expectations slapped on it these days. That said, I really don't like the AI so far in Drive Club (but that might just me because I'm too bad at it, but it feels ridiculously aggressive).

However, when was the last time a "pure" racer got a decent score on the merits of it's actual driving model? WRC, Moto GP etc were all a lot better than the reviews stated too because they aren't reviewed by particular fans of those disciplines.

Racing games seem to be approached as need to have this huge be anything and everything full of bells and whistles, otherwise they get lumbered with mediocre scores. WRC4 was a much better rally game than any of the DIRT games. But because it didn't have all the different event types etc, was still hammered by critics.

Yeah the AI in DC ranges from unforgiving to purely vindictive. It's a lot like the AI bastards on the higher difficulty levels in Pacific rift (That was not an easy game to complete), except here they're all stuck together on narrow roads. I swear I can see them opening the driverside window just to slap you in the face as they wrestle their way through :) Going from first to last place still occasionally happens to me. Beating them feels good though, and I don't feel bad for pushing them around too hehe.

Racers get overlooked a lot nowadays. I enjoyed WRC last gen, however I had to import it from Europe. They didn't even bother to release it here until a year later or more. They're decent games, yet with WRC it always seems the loading screens are as long as the driving. They're not, but when you're doing well it certainly feels that way. Colin McRae was better in that aspect, but yeah, that turned to dirt along with Colin. (sorry, that was a bit morbid)
I've played all the DiRT games as well. (except Showdown) They weren't bad, but actual rally was way under represented. 4 locations with short stages instead of 9 at the height of Colin McRae rally. WRC4 at least has the content and is much better at the core rally gameplay than DiRT, but nobody cares. 11 reviews on Metacrtic, not a single major site. Too bad Rallisport challenge was killed off. That had nice long tracks.

I also enjoyed Ferrari challenge and Test drive: Ferrari racing legends. It was great to drive vintage cars on historic tracks. Good games, simply described as boring and difficult in reviews.

At least DriveClub is getting lots of exposure!
