Yes I played it.  There is nothing special about the gameplay at all.  The lack of customization is sad.  It is in a similiar boat to Titanfall.  Launch content was meh, but Titanfall has expanded greatly.  One of the best post-launch supported games from a dev imo for consoles.  You guys just feel the same about Driveclub.  I just do not care for the gameplay in Driveclub and weather effects do nothing but hinder gameplay.  Look very nice though.

Indeed, same way I feel about Titanfall or online fps in general nowadays. The lack of customization is what makes it better for me. If by that you mean altering the way the car behaves (better engines, tuning, etc)

I have not touched online fps anymore since rpg elements got into it, or perks, or customization, whatever you want to call it. I used to be quite competitive in Unreal tournament and Half-life death match, yet nowadays a quick try is all I'll give the multiplayer. Then see all the 'work' I need to do to get guns or attributes and forget about it. I liked it when all you needed was to learn the maps, power up locations, weapon locations, and instant fun. So that's probably why Driveclub better fits my playing style.

Funny you say weather hinders gameplay. I guess so do the turns in the roads :p It adds challenge in handling the car and tests your knowledge of the track, both are part of the core gameplay of DriveClub.
