You don't really need to have an affection for Nintendo characters to get into Smash. The opposite usually happens. I don't think Earhbound would have been a cult classic without smash. Just play it and use a character that looks cool to you. That's how many people fell in love with Smash. That's how many people got introduced to their favorite nintendo franchises.
