I'm not sure Pixar would even want to do a Mario movie ... if they were going to do a movie with a licensed/pre-existing property I suspect they'd rather go for Star Wars, Marvel, or one of Disney's legacy characters like Mickey/Donald etc.
Oh well. I think Mario could be bigger than the Smurfs, and those movies were fairly awful.
Maybe Nintendo chose Sony as well not only because they are Japanese but because if they have a concern they feel more at home taking their concerns to the top with a guy like Kaz Hirai who comes from the game industry. They might feel maybe he would understand Mario more than some American Hollywood studio head.
