I've said for quite some time that it's high time for Nintendo to start making movies and series based on their IP, although, I'm not quite sure this is the way to go. Sega is apparently seeking to make movies as well, and they started their own production company to do so - that's what Nintendo needs to do as well. Selling off the movie rights to Mario just isn't all that smart. I'm guessing it might be Sony Pictures Animation that will work on this, yes? That gives me even less confidence this will turn out well; that studio hasn't done anything remarkable, which is needed if you gonna handle the Mario franchise... |
I don't think Nintendo would front the $100 million or so it would take to make an animated Mario film. The Final Fantasy film got Sakaguchi fired basically I think.
And yeah it will likely be Sony Pictures Animation or Production I.G. (Avi Arad works closely with them).

And that's kind of the problem with Nintendo; they don't seem willing to spend money to earn money. Having their own movie production company would allow them to make sure the movies turn out good. I've said that Mario, and perhaps more so, Metroid would make great movies. If done right. I'm not sure Sony can do that.
Production IG seem to be a pretty good fit though; they've worked with Nintendo before.

Yeah but do we even know if Nintendo could make a good movie? We saw what happened when Metroid's creator was given full story control for a more cinematic Metroid. Imagine sitting through 2 hours of that in a theater. "The baby ... the baby ... the baby ...".
