 Well, if we assume Sonic's weight to be 35 Kg (per wikipedia again), this gives us Sonic having a Kinetic Energy at Max Speed of .5 * 35 * ~300^2.  This gives us 1,575,000 Joules of energy that Sonic would be hitting the ghost with; from the conservation of momentum we know M_si * V_si = M_mcf * V_mcf + M_sf * V_sf.  If we assume Sonic stops moving when he hits MC (that is, all the momentum transfers) then we get M_si * V_si = M_mcf * V_mcf.  The weight of a ghost is 3.25 tons, or about 3300 Kg. Solving for the final velocity of the Ghost, we get M_si * V_si /M_mcf = 3.18 m/s is the speed of the ghost after impact.  This movement has energy = 1/2 * 3300 * (3.18)^2 = 16,700 joules. 

This means that in the impact of sonic + ghost, over 1,500,000 joules of energy are released in a tremendous explosion.  This is on the same order of magnitude as a kilogram of TNT.  I am not sure that MC could survive that, even within the ghost, whereas we know Sonic can as he is able to move at that speed (the friction at mach 1 alone would be enough to tear humans apart, but Sonic lives just fine).
