Yea, I believe Disney Infinity did something similar with some of their toys as well. They stopped shipping a select # of toys to retailers until a cartoon or a movie came out for those toys and then they started shipping those toys again and I think Nintendo is planning to do the same.
It would be utterly stupid if Animal Crossing for wiiU or SMT x FE comes out and Villager or Marth amiibos don't come back or have some sort of an integration with them. And no one really cares about the wii fit trainer anyway
