Nintendo have the most valuable gaming IPs in the industry; I could see possibly a change in leadership and direction at somepoint forced by stockholders, but it's absurd to think they will disappear from the console industry. they have succeeded profitly for decades as they are

it would make more sense to hear this right prior to the Wii release (after mediocre showings by Nintendo 64 and Gamecube), not now, when they are more closely tied to a great successful system than then

the reality is that when you have IP's as popular and powerful as Zelda and Mario and Pokemon you don't exactly have to feel forced or rushed or panicked in terms of your position in the industry. Nintendo has constantly been a leader, not a loser. and they sit on how many billions of dollars? hell, if Nintendo wanted (if they were that concerned with profits and revenue) they could sit out on console making for a while, specifically focus on handhelds, and then return to consoles later. their company is not at any huge risk currently. although obviously we all have heard of the likely handheld/console hybrid that will be coming

anyone with a brain also understands that Nintendo's IP leverage would be worth far less if they did not construct their own systems. that is just common knowledge

these articles seem more wishful than based on anything realistic. when you have had NO console life cycle in which you have lost money in your whole history in the video game business there is not a need for panicking

Sega panicked. They did not have the power of the IPs that Nintendo have so desperately attempted to make innovative systems and did a poor job at it. created the Saturn which had great specs for the time and then when it didn't catch on rushed to create the Dreamcast

Nintendo has what is needs to last in the console business permanently; strong IP's, money, and most importantly, patience
