Yes, the most important 2 months of the whole year. November and December is when most people buy consoles millions of consoles get sold. Come new year you will see how bad the sales will be for consoles I do not think Sony will make up for all the losses in Nov+Dec. |
I think you have it backwards. Over the last 2 months of the year MS has been desperately trying to make up for the losses over the previous 10 months. If the PS4 lead falls from 1 million to 300K that's still a net gain to Sony during 2014 of about 150K. So how do you figure that means Sony losing? If we're all about the marathon not the sprint as MS likes to claim, it appears Sony's 10 month strategy > MS's 2 month strategy. And come Hiliday next year, with SOny being able to afford significant price incentives without having to take a loss (I assume), what's going to happen to MS's 2 month sprint? They might still win 2015 Nov/Dec NPD, but the margin could be negligible, which means if Sony builds up a gradual lead Jan-Oct that lead will be largely retained; advantage Sony.
And basically your critique of Sony's approach to PS4 is purely on the basis that Best Buy is failing to stock the popular PS4 sku's and also failing to sell the unpopular sku. That reads more like an indictment on Best Buy's procurement policies than on Sony's supply availability, especially if popular PS4 skus are readily available through other retail chains. If Best Buy refuses to stock other PS4 skus until Destiny has substantially sold through, then it looks like Best Buy needs to do a Destiny bundle fire sale and knock it right down to $399, just to clear the shelves. Unless Sonyhas a retailer return policy, sometimes if you mis-read the market and overstock on something that's not as popular as you hoped you have to take it on the chin, sell at a loss and move on. Hell Sony did that for the first 3 years of PS3's life. Surely Best Buy can do it for one PS4 sku for a month or 2.
I do hope Sony has stopped producing the Destiny Bundle. If that Bundle starts gathering dust in Sony warehouses then Sony will need to incentivise it a bit. EIther by throwing in a dowload code...for GTAV maybe. Or formally dropping the price.
