I'm too tired/lazy to find the studies again, but i have done research on Americas health care versus the world community as well as issues like this regarding contraception and "religious protection". Plenty of studies show that folks who identify as agnostic or atheist actually know more about scripture than those who identify as memebers of a specific religion.
Religion is built on not asking questions and accepting faith on its face which goes against teh grains and basic concepts of knwoledge and education. I guess thats your answer as to why religion breeds ignorance in a nutshell.
