I'd say it's a huge success, no other hand held has managed to not only survive against a Nintendo hand held, but also steal a large amount of it's market share.
So I'd say Sony should be and probably is happy with the success of it's 1st hand held console, of course they could of done better, but they have set the first stepping stone and that is to create mind share, their next hand held will most likely do even better.
