The "Someone else would have done it eventually" argument is pretty weak. You could say that about most things...

yeah you could and it is true with most things.  Sorry but the crash wasn't this massive dark ages.  It was a brief period where Atari crashed because of their retarded policies and mismanagement and since they controlled a lot of the US market the US market "crashed."  It was quickly revitalized when a player from the non-crash Japan decided to test out the MASSIVE audience there that had proven it loved gaming in the past.  SEGA probably would have nutted up a couple years later and done it or maybe another Japan maker.  Nintendo was just the first and being older should get you any special consideration.
