Because the levels are designed with high speed as the main focus and that does not work (in a 2D side scroller) because it eliminates reflexes in favor of memorizing. Playing at lower speeds completely lacks challenge and feels empty and unrewarding while at high speeds, It requires little to no reflexes from the player, you just memorize when to press the jump button and you're good to score high. Haven't you wondered why no developer tried to copy it and why Sega ultimately decided to ditch it? |
I hear your points, and acknowledge them.... but for me, i LOVE the sense of speed in Sonics old games, and feel a sense of accomplishment in finishing the green hill zone for example in around the 30 second mark, i personally feel that there is skill nivolved in the older sonic games, the twitch controls are spot on and immensively responsive, and the bosses are varied and challenging..... but hey, i also know that Sonic aint everybodys cup of tea, buy hey ho
With regards to copying them, theres plenty of fast platformers out there, Sonic just stays one step ahead because he has "Sonic Speed"
