Gaming - Sci-Fi vs Fantasy - View Post

I don't understand this thread, sci-fi is fantasy unless you think that sci-fi movies/games are an accurate depiction of what the future will look like.

And there are a lot of games that combine magic with science (Metroid Prime 3: planet Bryyo, Mogenar).

Is a Mario game considered fantasy to you? Or are you strictly speaking of your typical rpg like Final Fantasy here?

It doesn't matter whether sci-fi is accurate, it's still fiction, doesn't make it fantasy.

Fantasy: A genre of imaginative fiction involving magic and adventure, especially in a setting other than the real world.

Science Fiction: Fiction based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes, frequently portraying space or time travel and life on other planets.

Sure there is overlap, Star wars being a good example. There is plenty sci-fi that tries to depict what the future could look like.

Mario is not imaginative fiction involving magic and adventure. You got to have some sort of story first.

It kinda comes down to, do you like plausible explanations for what happens in your stories, or do you prefer to go with it's magic no explanation needed. It's literally fiction based on science vs fiction based on magic. Plus sci-fi generally plays out in the future while fantasy focusses more on the past.
