Take the series The Seeker, based on the Sword of Truth series of books by Terry Goodkind. I loved the series, but they completely rewrote the storyline and basically took a dump on the original IP. The books were pretty sensational (then again, not something I'd consider appropriate for regular TV, more like HBO GoT levels of violence/bloodshed). But it definitely ruined the TV show for anyone who'd read the books. I think that's more tolerable for folks, with concepts pike the xmen/super heroes. Not sure why, possibly because the comics had one plot, cartoons yet another etc. . . Even LOTR and The Hobbit have taken artistic liberties with the original plot (disappointing for me, certainly) but I'm aware that my tastes and issues don't reflect those of your avg movie/game player. I watched a few episodes on the Seeker and thought it was garbage compared to the books. Anyway yes those sadistic torture scenes wouldn't work on mainstream TV.
I would love to see the Wheel of time turned into an epic movie saga. Or for a bit less ambitious project Memory, Sorrow and Thorn from Tad Williams. At least give us some Discworld movies.
Sci-Fi movies don't compare to sci-fi stories either, this year I've read among others 2312, Bowl of heaven, The long earth/war, The quantum thief, Hull Zero three. Blows any movie out of the water. It's a shame that Interstellar is about as intelligent sci-fi as you can get in big budget movies nowadays. It looks and sounds great anyway.
Btw how does Game of thrones compare to the books? I've read all the books so far but I'm getting a bit over the story. The first books were great but it's been going downhill. I always hear people going on about the red wedding, which certainly was a great scene in the books, yet not the best by far.
