3-4 hours on two separate controllers? That's about the lowest I've heard of; I'd suspect something was wrong with them or that they aren't being fully charged each cycle.
I always use the PS4 to charge controllers, so I have a tendency to just assume that's the best way to charge them. I think I average maybe 7 hours per charge. I don't marathon games so I can only gauge based on how many times a week each controller is charged.
I rotate controllers. As soon as one is at 1 power bar, it gets plugged into the PS4 and the fully charged controller is used.
