To me there are three major categories and within those categories in sport three clear dominant forces globally.

Summer Olympics - Biggest general athletics competition

FIFA World Cup - Biggest single national sport tournament

UEFA Champions League - Biggest club sport tournament

After that big drop off to Winter Olympics, Rugby and Circket World Cups and then various club sport competitions.
