I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong with it necessarily. In fact, having the ability to reduce the difficulty can be a good training tool, sort of like a kid learning to ride a bicycle by using training wheels at first. A good example of this for me is Mars Matrix (DC). When I first played the game, the difficulty seemed completely ridiculous. I like to have a decent challenge in a game, but it seemed so hard at first that I didn't even feel like I had a chance. However, I was able to reduce the difficulty by cranking up my lives and credits so that I could start to focus more on learning the patterns without having to worry so much about dying. After lots and lots of practice, I eventually managed to beat the game on the default settings. It was one of the most exciting moments in my 28 years of gaming. If I hadn't been able to reduce the difficulty initially, there's a good chance I would have just given up.
