Psychological insecurity. You can back up digital games and not disc based. But what if something goes wrong and the game goes away? I can't physically touch my game like I can touch the disc. Unless it's stolen, no one can "meddle" with my games. Also, I can loan and be loaned games from friends without a middleman dictating what I do with my own property.
This isn't my mindset but I can imagine it's a lot of folks. It's mostly irrational but could be a reason.
