Devil May Cry (PS2, 2001)

Originally developed as a Resident Evil game, Devil May Cry shares much of the sinister atmosphere and violence of Capcom's famous survival-horror series. Yet, unlike Resident Evil, or, at least, the Resident Evil games that preceded it, Devil May Cry is concerned much more with fast-paced, frenetic action. Despite a few puzzle-solving and platform sections, Devil May Cry is oriented around combat, stylish fighting, and combination attacks. And on that front, the game is a wild success. With a huge assortment of enemy types, weapons, upgrades, and boss battles, plus nimble controls and style to spare, Devil May Cry is a masterpiece of arcade action.
