Not trying to start something, i just don't see the argument that defends that idea. From my PoV, i would say both are extremely popular, but if i had to guess which one wins, it would be Pokemon because of sales and awareness.

GTA sells less? Have you even seen how much the last 3 mainline GTA games sold? GTA: SA sold 27 million units, GTA IV sold 25 million units and GTA V has sold 34 million units on last-gen consoles, which is more tha ANY Pokemon game. Is the biggest series in gaming.
Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire might sell more than GTA V on PS4/XB1, but that would be due to GTA V being a port of a year-old game. GTA however is a much more popular series, if sales decide popularity.

We are talking about the whole IP, not top selling game of either. GTA IP managed to sell 140M, while Pokemon sold over 230M.

Anyways sales of an entire IP doesn't indicate its popularity. Individual games do and that's where GTA outsells Pokemon. Any series can sell a lot with annual releases.
