No it wasn't, it was not a competing console. It went after a different crowd with different software. I can't see how you can put them in the same race as the PS3 and 360. It sold casual electronic entertainment. The same way smartphones did. If you wanna count the Wii as last gen with electronic entertainment such as wii sports, just dance, wii fit, wii play you have to count the iphone as well.
You can't expect recognition for making up a route, running alone and arriving at a different ending.
What the PS3 won can be reflected on the success of the PS4. What the Wii won is money for nintendo and nothing else. The wii competed for casual gamers and lost big time to smart devices.
