I have done this. I bought a DS4 to replace a DS3 about 2 months before I got a PS4.

The things I noticed mainly were that the PS button doesn't quite work and with no light indicator, you sometimes can't tell which controller port it's set to. It was set to 3 for me once, didn't realise until I switch controllers a few times. If you can get one cheap enough and in prep for one day getting a PS4 it may be worth it.
