Which audience are they not interested in? The former Wii owners who are no longer in the console market, or the PS360 owners who are in the console market? Are you expecting another whole new audience to magically appear to which Wii U will sell? It's pretty clear that Nintendo is already getting its core Nintendo audience. But it's also pretty clear that's not a very big audience. And by what Fils-Aimes is saying he is clearly wanting to attract a larger audience than the one he's getting right now.
In terms of games that will sell huge numbers SSB is their last roll of the dice. After that it's just price cuts and 2nd tier games. And MS and Sony both have price cuts up their sleeves. And no matter how good the 2nd tier games are they are not big audience grabbers.
If Nintendo is content with 20-25 million for Wii U then that's all fine. But I get the feeling they are not at all happy with that prospect, and it was certainly not their target lifetime sales when they launched.
Has any journalist actually asked Nintendo how the hell could they screw up so badly in the generation that immediately followed Sony's huge screw up, which ended up not being as big of a screw up as people first thought it would be?
