It's evolving, and growing more dangerous arguably. In the 60s at the height of their violence, they were a large part of Southern culture, a good ol' boys club that respected members of the community could freely participate in, or could be encouraged to participate in, depending on how fierce the locality was about segregation. Nowadays, however, it is exclusively the domain of the hardcore white supremacists, more dangerous but also less well-defined, mingling freely with the Nazis, Sovereign Citizens, and other fringe right-wing groups.
