This must be why TLoU reviewed so well?
I think the whole "open world" vs "cinematic world" has been overblown by PR agencies promoting games, Ubi has their recepy, they make open world by the numbers (I.E. they're all more or less reskinned games with the same content) and on the other end of the spectrum you have the SP campaign of titles like CoD (all of them) or Battlefield who are so very linear that there is no way a player may want to re-play them...
Some games are good as open world, so long as the structure and the narrative does not get overly dilluted... and others are better in a more linear fashion, as long as the "levels" or scenarios are not overly linear, TLoU and some Killzone:SF are great example of this, you can approach them differently depending on your play stile, this is what really matters... even then, a racing game or other 'skills' based game invite you to replay and learn the environment to perform better, they have to be linear by nature...
As much as I love the FarCry randomness I really like the linear games just as much, it really depends on the title... same with movies should we have only comedies? or can we have both comedies and drama because people like different things at different times?
