Linearity, I think, is a red herring. There's no witch hunt, among consumers or in the media, for linear games. Many recent linear titles -- Wolfenstein, The Evil Within, Alien: Isolation, to name a few -- sold and scored well. Heck, Bayonetta just scored a 91. If we go back to the previous generation, linear games like Uncharted 2 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are among the highest rated games of all time.
People are complaining about The Order because it doesn't look like fun to play, and because it seems like the developer prioritized story and graphics over gameplay.
